Monte Rei to make children’s wishes come true with Make-A-Wish Portugal partnership

Monte Rei Golf & Country Club will be helping to make wishes come true for children with critical illnesses this April when it hosts a fundraising golf event to help celebrate the 46th global anniversary of Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The iconic golf resort in Portugal’s Algarve has teamed up with the worldwide charity to stage Golf-For-Wishes, an event which coincides with World Wish Month and marks Make-A-Wish’s annual anniversary. Golfers and non-golfers are both welcome, with all proceeds raised going toward creating life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

Founded in 1980, Make-A-Wish® is one of the world’s leading wish-granting organisations, recognised by the United Nations. Thanks to the efforts of its generous donors, supporters, staff and more than 32,000 global volunteers, the foundation has granted more than 650,000 wishes in nearly 50 countries and territories around the world. In Portugal, Make-A-Wish Portugal has been granting life-changing wishes since 2007 and has already fulfilled more than 2,300 wishes nationally, with an average of 300 wishes currently awaiting realisation.

Taking place on Saturday, April 11 and costing €245 per person, the Golf-For-Wishes Shotgun event will be played in a fourball betterball pairs format and offers golfers the opportunity to play 18 holes on Monte Rei’s acclaimed North Course, which was designed by 18-time Major winner Jack Nicklaus and is widely regarded as the Algarve’s number one course. The full entry fee from the event will be donated to Make-A-Wish Portugal, with the aim of granting ten life-changing wishes for children in need.

Driving-range access before the round and buggies are also included in the entry fee together with a three-course lunch including drinks, prize-giving and charity auction. Non-golfers can also join in the fun for €65 person, which includes a two-hour introductory golf lesson and three-course lunch with drinks, while sponsorships are available for those people who would like to participate and support the event.

A variety of sponsorship packages can be purchased including the opportunity to sponsor a hole or the nearest-the-pin and longest drive competitions.

“Partnerships like this remind us that a wish is never just a moment, it’s a turning point for a child and their family. When a community comes together, as Monte Rei is doing through Golf-For-Wishes, we are not only raising funds, we are raising hope. Every wish granted brings strength, joy and renewed belief during some of the most challenging times in a child’s life,” said Margarida Galvão, CEO of Make-A-Wish Portugal.

Nuno Sepulveda, co-CEO at DETAILS, the management company of Monte Rei Golf & Country Club, added: “Golf has a unique way of bringing people together and creating connections that go far beyond the game. It is in this spirit that we partnered with Make-A-Wish Portugal, turning one of our courses into a stage for solidarity and hope.

“This event will allow us to see the real impact of this initiative on children and their families, helping make wishes come true and truly making a difference. We hope that its objectives will be fully achieved, paving the way for many more editions in the future. Golf, after all, has a role beyond sport: it can unite communities and create a lasting positive impact.”
